IEEE Harmonics Benchmark Model
The harmonics_basedonIEEEarticle.dss model is an OpenDSS-based harmonic analysis benchmark derived from the IEEE PES GM 2024 paper on harmonics benchmarking. It provides a reference network for validating harmonic power flow solvers and studying harmonic distortion in transmission and distribution systems.
Model Overview
The network includes:
- Voltage sources at 230 kV (buses 1, 2) and 115 kV (bus 6)
- Lines and transformers across multiple voltage levels (230 kV, 115 kV, 35.4 kV, 13.8 kV)
- Linear loads with spectrum=Linear at various buses
- TCR load at bus 8 (13.8 kV) with spectrum=TCR_PU — Thyristor-Controlled Reactor
- HVDC loads at buses 301 and 302 (35.4 kV) with spectrum=HVDC_PU — High Voltage Direct Current converters
- Shunt capacitor at bus 9
- Single-tuned harmonic filters at bus 8 (2nd, 5th, 7th, 11th harmonics) and bus 3 (11th harmonic)
The model uses transformer phase shifts (YNd1) between HVDC loads and TCR to achieve harmonic cancellation effects as described in the benchmark. Electrisim automatically injects the built-in TCR_PU and HVDC_PU spectrum definitions during import when they are referenced but not defined in the file.
Reference and Source Files
This model is based on the OpenDSS HarmonicsBenchmarking example. The original source files (loads, filters, transformers, lines, and spectrum CSV files) are available in the OpenDSS repository:

How to Import into Electrisim
Follow these steps to use the model in the Electrisim app:
- Download the
harmonics_basedonIEEEarticle.dssfile (link below). - Open Electrisim in your browser.
- Go to File → Import → OpenDSS.
- Select the
harmonics_basedonIEEEarticle.dssfile from your computer. - Electrisim will parse the model and inject the TCR_PU and HVDC_PU spectrum definitions automatically.
- For harmonic analysis, set Analysis Type to Harmonic in the Power Flow parameters before running the simulation.
