10-bus Italian grid template in Electrisim Transmission tab

Italian transmission network with HVDC (Hypergrid) – model and thesis

A new model has been added to the open-source Electrisim application: Hypergrid – Italian transmission network with HVDC VSC. This article summarises the work behind it and how to use the model.

Background

This is the result of Antonino Patti’s thesis from Università degli Studi di Palermo, concerning the development of a simplified 10-bus model of the Italian transmission network and the subsequent integration of HVDC technology, with the aim of implementing the project envisaged in the Terna 2023 Development Plan (Italian TSO), known as Hypergrid.

Model validation

The first analysis carried out was the validation of the 10-bus model without interconnections by comparing the obtained results with those from another specialized software, Neplan. Once the model was validated, the HVDC network foreseen by the Hypergrid project was implemented.

HVDC implementation

This implementation was carried out using the DC objects available in the pandapower library. The model is now available in Electrisim as a template under the Transmission tab, named 10-bus Italian grid.

Acknowledgements

We would like to thank Antonino Patti for his work. We are also grateful for the continuous improvement of pandapower, without which this would not have been possible.

How to use the model in Electrisim

In the Electrisim app, create a new diagram. In the template dialog, open the Transmission tab and select the template 10-bus Italian grid. You can then run load flow and short-circuit analysis on the model.
